Leading Causes of Construction Accidents in Georgia

Although strict safety rules and regulations govern construction sites, accidents and mistakes can still result in catastrophic injuries, such as brain damage and spinal cord injuries. According to OSHA, one out of every five workplace fatalities in the US is construction-related. And the agency identifies what they refer to as the ?Fatal Four? causes of construction worker deaths:

  • Falls: Slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of construction accidents, and they account for approximately one third of all construction-related deaths. Construction workers frequently perform fast-paced tasks in elevated areas where there are often slippery surfaces and very little room to maneuver. Under these types of conditions, a lot can go wrong, and it is incumbent upon employers to follow all safety regulations and best practices to help prevent slip and fall accidents.
  • Struck by Objects: The second leading cause of construction accidents is getting struck by an object or struck against a hard surface. These types of events account for approximately 11% of all construction-related deaths. On a typical construction site, there are a lot of moving parts, and dozens of workers that are performing tasks alongside each other. If things are not properly organized, workers can often get struck by heavy machinery, loose tools, falling debris, or they can fall and get thrown onto a hard surface.
  • Electrocutions: Electrical injuries are the third leading cause of construction accidents, accounting for approximately 8.5% of construction workplace fatalities. On almost every construction project, there is a lot of electrical work that is being performed simultaneously as the structure is being built. All of this wiring is necessary and needs to be completed before the finishing work is done, but it can also be very dangerous if something goes wrong.
  • Caught In-Between/Crush Injuries: Getting caught in-between or crushed is the fourth leading cause of construction accidents, accounting for approximately 5.5% of all industry fatalities. Working with so much going on often in enclosed areas heightens the risk of someone getting trapped or crushed.

OSHA?s Fatal Four collectively account for almost 60% of all construction site deaths, and the agency says that if these hazardous events could be eliminated, it would save the lives of approximately 600 industry workers each year.

These are the leading causes of construction accidents that happen at the jobsite. However, OSHA also notes that a significant number of worker accidents also happen off-site, usually in the form of vehicle crashes. On a typical Atlanta construction site, materials and supplies need to be brought in and waste needs to be removed on an almost daily basis. This means a steady stream of trucks moving onto and off of the site.

SEEKING COMPENSATION AFTER A WORKPLACE ACCIDENT

Your supervisors are expected to provide you with a reasonably safe work environment and take every precaution to ensure that you aren?t injured. If these precautions weren?t taken, you may be eligible to pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and more. Depending on the facts of your case, this can be achieved through a workers? compensation and/or personal injury claim.

After a work-related accident, you may have several options for compensation. In fact, there are four different types of claims that you may be able to pursue, including:

  • Workers? Compensation: In Georgia, most employees are entitled to workers? comp benefits after a workplace accident, regardless of who was at fault. Through this system, you would be able to recover compensation for medical bills and lost wages while you are out of work, and it is not necessary to prove fault on behalf of your employer in order to qualify for benefits.
  • Personal Injury Claim: If you can prove that another person or company is responsible for your injuries, you may also be able to seek compensation through a personal injury lawsuit?which would compensate you for pain and suffering, in addition to economic losses. This could be the case if, for example, a third party subcontractor who was working nearby caused the accident and your subsequent injuries, or if another driver caused a vehicle crash while you were transporting materials onto or off of the jobsite.
  • Product Liability Claim: If you can prove that the use of a dangerous or defective product?such as heavy machinery, equipment, tools, ladders, etc.?caused your injuries, you may be able to seek compensation through a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer.
  • Wrongful Death Claim: If your loved one was killed in a work-related accident, you and your family may be entitled to compensation. Depending on the facts of the case, you may be able to seek damages through a workers? compensation claim or wrongful death
