Although strict safety rules and regulations govern construction sites, accidents are inevitable. Some result in catastrophic injuries, such as brain damage and spinal cord injuries.

According to OSHA, one out of every five workplace fatalities in the U.S. is construction-related. Here are the “Fatal Four” causes of construction site fatalities:

• Falls: Slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of construction accidents, accounting for about one third of all construction-related deaths. Because construction workers frequently perform fast-paced tasks in elevated, often slippery areas, there is a lot that can go wrong. That is why it is crucial for employers to follow all safety regulations and best practices to help prevent slip and fall accidents.

• Struck by Objects: The second leading cause of construction accidents is getting struck by an object or struck against a hard surface. These types of events account for approximately 11% of all construction-related deaths. On a typical construction site, there are many moving parts, and often dozens of workers performing tasks in close proximity to each other. If things are not properly organized, workers may get struck by heavy machinery, loose tools or falling debris – or they may get thrown into a hard surface.

• Electrocutions: Electrical injuries are all too common as well, accounting for around 8.5% of all construction workplace deaths. On almost every construction project, extensive electrical work is being performed simultaneously as the structure is being built. All of this wiring must be completed before the finishing work is done, and working too quickly can result in disastrous mistakes.

• Caught In-Between/Crush Injuries: Getting caught in between objects or crushed is the fourth leading cause of construction accidents, making up 5.5% of all industry fatalities. Many projects occurring simultaneously increases workers’ risk of this.

OSHA’s Fatal Four combine to account for 60% of all construction site deaths. If these four hazardous events were completely eliminated from construction sites, about 600 lives could be saved each year.

Proving Fault
